Cell Phone Love
So, you want your brain connected to your phone? Well
according to Forbes there is such a thing. It’s not connected to our phone yet,
but it is connected to a computer. The user wears a mobile EEG device that is
connected to a computer. The users brain waves are sent to the computer where a
program deciphers the waves with a special program. “What will enable that
interactivity is, of course, our smartphones. Imagine having an app on your
phone that dials up other peoples’ brains, and maybe your brain will be in
their contact lists”. “Whoa” like Neo says in the Matrix.
Hey what’s the name of that place we got recommended to go
to? I don’t know let me get my phone and google it. That is what we hear daily “let
me get my phone”, I can’t be without my phone, my phone is my life. A while
back I witnessed the Mail Man deliver our phonebook to our house. I thought to
myself why even bother printing these books anymore and why waste the Mail Mans
time in him delivering it. I cannot remember the last time I used a phone book.
I always use my smartphone to look up places and get addresses, it’s a waste of
money and a waste of paper.
I remember a
time where It was required to learn how to use the library. We had to know what
books were labeled fiction and nonfiction. How to use a catalog for checking
out books and look up books from titles, authors, and subjects. That’s a thing of the past nowadays the
library is in your pocket, a powerful computer that can go anywhere, and it can
even make phone calls.
With such a powerful device in our hands we have unlimited
knowledge. With unlimited knowledge comes great responsibility. Yes, we have
the knowledge, but do we understand what we are reading and what we are
speaking? As Michael Patrick Lynch said fake news comes from having too much
information and only picking what we like. We don’t get the full story and people
don’t take the time to research the subject and present only the facts. People
tend to only state the information that pertains to them.
Fox, CNN, MSNBC are all blamed for producing fake news.
People only hear what they want to hear. It is not personalized like how social
media does it. Google for instance, when they gather your most relevant
searches and place advertisements, so you can click on the ads are making it
seem you are in control of what you are seeing. Instead of us using our cell
phones we should start using our imagination, we should get out of our bubble
and experience hands on research instead of going directly to our handy dandy
smart phones. Maybe we are too scared of failing and not being right, that we
are afraid of why it is important to go out and explore the world hands on. Be
humble and accept that we are not always going to be right.

Great blog...I agree that people believe only what they want to believe. Social media can have all the fake news but ultimately it is our own choice to believe it or not. We need to be unbiased!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I used to be a big fan of The Onion, a wonderful satirical fake newspaper. The difference between what they did and "fake news" is that The Onion never pretended to be anything but satirical whereas fake news sources consistently spread lies that they KNOW are lies.
ReplyDeleteFox News is notorious for this, spreading some fake story like the pizzagate incident, which prompted one crazy person to go armed to that pizza place and threaten the owners, which they later rescinded... very quietly. Conspiracy theories like Alex Jones and his InfoWars site is another source of consistently debunked nonsense that people believe. It's called confirmation bias; these fake news sources say what people WANT to believe because of their particular biases.
In any case, great response. Thanks!
